Every childcare centre can look similar online. A visit and a few pointed questions quickly reveal the differences. Use this checklist to compare centres with confidence.
1. Check the NQS Rating
Every service is assessed against the National Quality Standard. Look for Meeting or Exceeding NQS, and ask when the centre was last assessed.
2. Ask About Educators
Qualified, long-serving educators are the single biggest driver of quality. Ask about qualifications, the educator-to-child ratio, and staff turnover.
3. Look at the Program
A strong program follows the Early Years Learning Framework, balancing play with intentional teaching and, for older children, school readiness.
4. Walk the Environment
Is it clean, calm and well-organised? Are the outdoor spaces safe, shaded and stimulating? Do the children look happy and engaged?
5. Understand the Fees
Ask for the daily fee and what is included, then work out your real cost after the Child Care Subsidy and, for kinder-aged children, Free Kinder.
6. Judge the Communication
Good centres share your child’s day openly, through an app, photos and daily updates, and welcome your questions.
7. Trust the Feel
After the checklist, trust your instinct on the tour. If it feels warm and your child seems comfortable, that matters.
